Wells Fargo customers can now make card-free withdrawal on all its 13,000 ATMs, according to the bank’s news release. Instead of using their physical bank cards, the one-time access code technology allow customers to authenticate their transaction using their PIN and an 8-digit code.
One of the benefits is that customers can still make withdrawals, even when they leave their cards or wallets at home. For a start, a customer would need to log on to the Wells Fargo mobile app, select Card-Free ATM access and request an 8-digit access code. He/she would then go to their preferred ATM, enter the access code and card PIN, then complete their withdrawal.
Brett Pitts, the Head of Digital for Virtual Channels, said, “at Wells Fargo, we believe the future is cardless, and the launch of One-Time Access Code provides our 20 million mobile banking customers another convenient way to manage money”.
The bank also promised to implement card-free withdrawal on NFC-enabled ATM terminals, using the “tap and pay” technology deployed in mobile wallets such as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Android Pay. The feature will go live later this year.
Wells Fargo is the first large bank in the US, to operate card-free withdrawals on all their ATMs.
